"A speech is a solemn responsibility. The man who makes a bad 30 minute speech to 200 people wastes only a half hour of his time. But he wastes 100 hours of his audience's time - more than 4 days - which should be a hanging offense". - Jenkin Lloyd Jones.
An interesting perspective, and a reminder of why each presentation we make should be treated with the utmost respect. If ever you are tempted to "just turn up and wing it", think of the combined audience hours that will be spent listening to you, and ask yourself whether those hours will be well spent.
I do actually know one or two people who can "wing it and leg it" with style and aplomb, but those people are rare - and usually they have years of experience behind them.
Jenkin Lloyd Jones' quote has highlighted another reason - as if one were needed - to properly prepare and practice all our speeches in advance.
